Domain name registration - Notes
The right most portion of a domain name is called the top-level domain (TLD) name. At the moment, the most common generic top-level domain names are: com - for commercial entities (businesses) New TLD names are coming. Some of the recent additions are .biz and .info. There are also 192 county code top-level domain (ccTLD) names for individual countries. Examples: Canada (ca), Australia (au), United Kingdom (uk), United States (us), etc. Some interesting ones are Tuvalu (tv) and Micronesia (fm). Here is a list of 2 letter country codes. |
There are several registering authorities to register a domain name with. The original, old reliable, is Network
Solutions. Of course there are many, many more registrars. However, it is important that a webmaster choose a reputable, stable company for registering domain names. Be wary of "domain slamming". This company, Domain Registry of America, has sent me many mailings in the US mail looking like an authentic invoice to renew registration of domain names that I have registered at Network Solutions. When registering a domain name with a registering authority, you will need to provide contact information for the registrant, technical, administrative, and billing contacts. Registrant: The legal owner of the domain name. Do not put your name here. The legal owner's business name and address goes here. This information can not be changed easily. If this information should ever need to be changed, forms need to be filled out and a notarized. Technical Contact: Normally this is the contact of the person that handles the technical aspects of the web site. For ease of transferring from one web hosting provider to another, put your name and contact information here. Administrative Contact: This is the contact that that is in charge of the administration of the web site. For ease of transferring from one web hosting provider to another, put your name and contact information here. Billing Contact: This is where bills related to initial domain name registration and future renewals will be sent to. If you want to handle billing for domain name, put your name here. If you do not want to deal with billing, put the legal owner's name and contact information here. You will also be required to provide DNS addresses of the hosting provider that you have chosen to host your web site. |
